One of the few tools from old ages that can be used as a symbol of the worker's union is 'ulimaat' - an axe. It is a wooden shaft with a shape that makes it hit the wood or bone harder than it's actual weight.
It was used to split wood - drift wood - which was used for the frame inside the kayak, umiaq, tent or what ever needed a light wooden scelleton. Of course it has also been used to cut up meat and other heavier works.
This is the tool you see as the symbol of Sulisartut Højskoliat - the workers' folk high school.
